Compare this with what is happening in most developed economies and the answer is clear. No company in South Africa, or elsewhere in Africa, can afford to ignore the potential African markets have to offer. Yet the reality is that most leaders and business development executives, in most companies, have only spoken about opportunities in the rest of Africa.

This one-day Forum intends to shed light on the core instruments needed to “navigate” the challenging economic and business landscape in Africa. No “over-the-top” marketing and praise singing. Just facts and real-life business lessons, facilitated by a team of experts who have actually spent time in East Africa, West Africa, Central Africa, Southern Africa and North Africa. You will get the opportunity to see the reality of doing business in Africa. 

After attending the Forum, you will appreciate key background issues, their dynamics, set-ups and how they relate to business opportunities: 

  • The African business culture, similar to that of Asia, is driven more by relationships and less by transactions.
  • When it comes to doing business in Africa, it’s neither one country nor 54 countries. Rather, you have to take a regional approach. For example: Many business travellers to West Africa find Accra to be close enough to access Nigeria’s large market, but prefer the quality of life that Accra affords.
  • Brand loyalty is high.  See the food and beverage and banking sectors.
  • Corruption is taken seriously because it costs entrepreneurs and inhibits growth.
  • Poor people have market preferences, too. Don’t make assumptions. 
  • Modes of communication are different. The mobile phone is the business tool of choice.  
  • Use local consultants and experts. They have insight into customs, cultures and relationships. 

NOTE: The Forum will be interactive, allowing you to consider various scenarios of business undertaking and reflect on possible outcomes. There will be 4 break-away sessions after the Panel discussion.

 Prof PD Rwelamila, PhD, Pr.CPM, FCIOB:
 
 Specialization areas are project management, project delivery systems, influence of culture  on project management, and construction industry development. His research interests are  appropriate project delivery systems, best practices in construction industry development,  public private partnerships (PPPs) in infrastructure development, construction industry policy, culture in organisations, TQM and project dispute resolution methods. He is the second most cited academic in the world in Project Management, is currently a Professor of Project Management at the Graduate School of Business Leadership (GSBL), University of South Africa (UNISA).

He was the past President of The South African Council for Project and Construction Management Professions (SACPCMP) (2005-2009).  He is the joint coordinator: International Council for Research & Innovation in Building & Construction (CIB) – W107: Construction in developing countries.  Until early 2013, he was  the Chairperson & non-executive Director of MSINGI Construction Project Management (Pty) Ltd, a Construction project management consulting firm based in Cape Town, South Africa. He is a non-executive Director and joint owner of XPQ Consulting Services (Pty) Ltd, a project management consulting firm based in Pretoria, South Africa. He is currently a member on the research advisory panel of the CSIR Built Environment Division on Infrastructure Design & Construction.

Prof Rwelamila was appointed a member (by the Minister of Public Works) to the statutory South African Council for Project and Construction Management Professions (SACPCMP) and Council for the Built Environment (CBE) – (2002 -2005) & SACPCMP (2006 -2009).  He was also a former Vice President (Education) of CIOB – Southern Africa 2000-2005).

He has worked in a number of countries, including Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia, Botswana, Sweden, United Kingdom, Australia, and United Arab Emirates (specifically in Dubai).

 Gary Alfonso, MBA Henley UK.
 
 Strategic Consultant and Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Gotel Africa Media Ltd, a news and  multi-media channel launched in the first quarter of 2015 across Africa, based in Nigeria. He  has developed new Africa bureaus and company affiliates for international organizations in 13 countries throughout Africa. 

Gary specializes in strategic and operational management, stakeholder engagement, business leadership development, training, media and communication, as well as contract negotiation and regulatory affairs. He is currently developing digital multi-media platforms for media companies in West and Southern Africa.

Former Group Managing Director of CNBC Africa in Johannesburg (2007 to 2012), he was part of the executive team that launched the business news channel in June 2007, as well as Forbes Africa in September 2011. His work outside South Africa exposed him to regulatory, legal, political and economic dynamics in the rest of Africa, where international organisations were increasingly setting up partnerships and infrastructure.
    
From February 1999 to February 2007, he was the General Manager/Director of Programming at Summit TV (now Business Day TV), where he managed channel operations, content quality and key commercial and stakeholder relationships. 

He was a media professional, newsroom manager and TV producer at the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) between 1989 and 1999. Highlights included covering South Africa’s transition to democratic rule in 1994, as well as President Nelson Mandela’s historic trip to the United States in 1994 as the newly elected president of a democratic new South Africa. 

 Michael Lalor  (MBA) University of KZN:
 
 Michael is a partner, based in South Africa, responsible for EY’s Africa Business Center™. He  has masters’ degrees in political economy and literary studies.

 Michael has over 15 years of consulting experience on various assignments servicing both listed African and foreign multinational companies. His areas of focus include strategy and business development. He has assisted clients across a range of sectors in projects, ranging from business concept feasibility studies to developing processes for innovation to developing blue-sky growth strategies.

As part of his portfolio, Michael is responsible for the firm’s thought leadership initiatives on Africa, including our flagship Africa Attractiveness publication. He is also currently working with a number of the firm’s clients from various countries and across a range of sectors, to assist them in developing, stress-testing and executing their Africa growth strategies.

 Bongani Aug Khumalo, MA (Fairfield), AEP (Unisa), Dipl. In Management  (Henley), MBA  (Henley), D Admin (hc) (Fort Hare) 

 Professor Khumalo is the Chief Executive of Gidani Proprietary Limited and Chairman of  Bongani Rainmaker Logistics and Gravitas Group, as well as the International Institute of  Business & Management (IIBM). He is a patron of the South African Business Coalition on  HIV/AIDS (SABCOHA) and Professor Extraordinaire and Chairman of the Africa Centre for HIV/AIDS Management (University of Stellenbosch). He is also a member of the Board of Afrika Tikkun and a scholar in economic and management sciences. Prof Khumalo also served on the Boards of Anglo Platinum and the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) as an independent non-executive director.

He is also past Chairman of Transnet Limited, and former Deputy Chief Executive of Eskom. In the year 2000 to 2001 Khumalo served as a Presidential Advisor on HIV/AIDS and Rural Development reporting to the Chairperson of the South African National AIDS Council [SANAC] at the time, Deputy President J G Zuma [now Incumbent President of the Republic of South Africa]. Prof Khumalo was previously the Chairman of the School of Business Leadership (SBL) at University of South Africa (Unisa).

In May 2013, Rob Yates had the unique opportunity to start again, leaving the past behind him and crafting a new future 10,000 kilometers from his home.

The goal was a simple one -, to take everything he had learnt, read & theorized about and work out what really was the recipe for success. This journey was not without its challenges, leaving hard-worked-for success in the UK, his family and friends, as Rob moved to South Africa to live with his wife, Kerry. Having no network, friends or even a clue where to start, he put all his faith in the power of intent and set about meeting as many people as possible with a desire to always leave a positive impression.

With much purpose, storytelling and intent, he met Mark Hopkins and later Andrew Brown and a great synergy between the three of them produced TetraKey.com, a business that strives for high quality strengths based on continual learning, with real positive behaviour change at every stage.
